Rivermont Sewalong Day 7: Sleeves and Side Seams

We’re almost done with our Rivermont Dresses and Tops! Today we’ll be setting in the sleeves and sewing the side seams. Again, the steps today are the same whether you’re making the top or the dress and whichever sleeve length you’re using.

Start by pinning your sleeve to the body at the shoulder seam, matching the notch, right sides together. Pin around the remainder of the sleeve cap, matching notches and shaping the body to fit the sleeve.

Sew slowly around the sleeve cap with the sleeve side down, making sure there aren’t any puckers as you sew. Press the seam allowance towards the sleeve. Repeat with the second sleeve.

Fold the entire dress or top in half, right sides together, aligning the side seams. Pin the underarm seam and waist seam together first. Pin from sleeve hem all the way to dress/top hem, matching notches along the way.

Sew this whole seam in one go, starting at the bottom hem, pivoting at the underarm seam, and finishing at the sleeve hem. Press the seam allowance towards the back. Repeat with the second side. That’s it for today! Tomorrow, we’ll hem the bottom and sleeves and we’ll be done!

Followed all the instructions and have a dress that just needs to be hemmed but have no opening for the pockets. Not sure where I went wrong

Hmm, not sure what happened there! Maybe the outer layer of the pocket got caught in the seam? If you would like, you can send photos to hello@cashmerette.com and we can help you from there.
