Activewear Sewalong: Spruce Tank Day 4

It’s the last day of our Spruce Workout Tank portion of the sewalong! Today we’ll be assembling and attaching the back straps and hemming the tank.

When it comes to the back straps, I’ll be showing you how it’s done in the instructions, but you can really be creative with this bit. You can even leave the straps off if you’d rather! Here are some ideas for other strap arrangements:

Whatever arrangement of straps you decide to make, start by assembling the straps, pinning right sides together along the two long ends.

Sew the long ends and turn the straps right side out using a safety pin or a strap turner. Press the straps flat with the seams on the edges.

Finish the open ends of your straps by serging or zigzag stitching them. Pin your straps to the wrong side of the back neckline at the markings or wherever you’ve decided to place them. Try the top on to make sure they lie the way you want them to. Adjust placement or length of straps if necessary.

Sew the straps to the top from the right side using a sewing machine and a zigzag stitch. Sew through the fold over elastic finishing the neckline and over the previous stitching as much as possible.

Gently press the straps and neckline. Now it’s time to finish the top with a hem! Fold the bottom hem to the wrong side by 1” (2.5 cm) and press. Pin from the right side or use wonder tape to hold the hem in place. Topstitch using a sewing machine and a zigzag stitch or a twin needle or using a coverstitch machine. Give the hem one last press.

You’ve finished your Spruce Workout Tank! We can’t wait to see what you’ve made! Share them using #CedarTank. Next up, the Cedar Dolman Top.
