A Colette Negroni for a West Coast Lumberjack

Happy Boxing Day readers! I hope you had a great Christmas or other holiday of your choice. And now the Christmas gift posts can commence.
You know, the only thing better than making garments for other people that they love? Seeing awesome photos of those garments!
Let me present to you my good friend Anthony, in his new Colette Negroni:

If you follow my antics on Instagram you might recognize Anthony as my pal who I gallivant around the world with. Most recently, I was visiting him in Berkeley and we popped into Stonemountain and Daughter for a wee peruse of their lovely fabrics. Now Anthony is a wise, wise man who knows me well. And therefore he knows better than to actually ask me to sew him something. However, his understated strategy paid off: accompany me to countless fabric shops over the years, show lots of interest in Cashmerette, have a particular fashion style… and voila! I found this cotton flannel at S&D which suited him perfectly and volunteered to make him a shirt.

I knew the Negroni would be a great pattern to use as Anthony prefers slim fit shirts – I made the S, slightly tapering out through the body. I pattern matched like a boss through the front, and then took the easy way out with bias pockets, cuffs, yoke and collar. This is my third time making this pattern and it’s nice to see how it gets a little easier, and a little more professional looking each time.

Anthony found this shirt useful not only for being a lumberjack (a lumbersexual p’rhaps?) but also having snowball fights:

and thinking deep thoughts of Thoreau in the woods near Spooner Lake, CA:

I don’t want to cause a public disturbance, so that’s the end of your eye candy quotient for today. Big thanks to Anthony for the Christmas day posing and Jonas for the awesome photos.

Did you make any man-gifts this year, dear readers? I feel like shirts always go down well as people think you’re magic to be able to make them! And I’ll keep up the idea that I’m magic whenever I can.

  1. He looks triffic! I’m mid way through my first negroni, short sleeves for summer in a rather vile print that my beloved chose himself. But I also made some gifts for some other man-friends using the Alexander Henry Wrangler fabric. Have you seen it? Such a winner!

    1. Jenny says:

That fabric is hilarious! I hope they all appreciate it and/or see it as inspiration 😉

  2. Great shirt and a nice gift. Didn’t make any man gifts as I have had no time off but now I am on holiday I will be making a quilt for a cat and a cushion with cats on (we all lobe cats in our family). Hope you had a great Christmas. I am so green, you have snow. Xx

    1. Jenny says:

Alas, Anthony has snow in Tahoe but I’m in Scotland where there’s zilch. Still, there’s lots of decorations so it still feels festive!

  3. Kate McIvor says:

I love this Negroni! My boyfriend will be happy I feel inspired. 🙂

Perfection! Anthony is a great model with great photos. Love the plaid matching!

    1. Jenny says:

Isn’t he just? I like to think that he has learned from the master 🙂

  5. okay AND he willingly, wonderfully posed for photos? this is a wise man indeed. i see more sewing gifts in his future. looking sharp, my man.

    1. Jenny says:

He’s figured out EXACTLY how to get more shirts made!

Though I will say THAT IF HE JUST MOVES THE HECK BACK TO BOSTON HE WOULD GET MORE THINGS (that was for Anthony, there).

  6. Sooooo good! Best pattern matching ever, and bonus points for snow and a handsome model.

    1. Jenny says:

Thanks! I need more handsome models & snow in my life, I think

Great photo’s, great shirt. It’s the second checked(plaid) Negroni I’ve seen this week. I was always put off by the lack of collar stand on this pattern but somehow that doesn’t stand out as much with the checks. I may risk making The Man one if I ever get anywhere near on top of my to sew list (although I’m still hoping Thread Theory will release a shirt pattern first).

    1. Jenny says:

I think the camp collar is fine for casual shirts although I think there are a few tutorials for how to convert it to a proper one. But I agree that I can’t wait for Thread Theory to come out with one – I’ve loved everything I’ve made from them so far!

  8. Annamari says:

I love this shirt. And I especially love, that you matched the pattern so well on the front.
Yes, I am knitting now a late Christmas-gift hat for husband and I just realized how big his head is. Although we are a couple for almost 8 years and I am a knitter for at least these years (but I guess a bit more), this is the first hat I am knitting for him.

    1. Jenny says:

Thanks! The more you practice pattern matching the easier it gets, I’m finding

  9. Wow, that is great plaid matching! Awesome shirt.

    1. Jenny says:

      Cheers Alicia !

  10. Wowzas! You did a beautiful job on this, and these photos are stunning to boot!

  11. Sue Parrott says:

I agree with everyone, great shirt, hunky model!

    1. Jenny says:

I’ll pass on your hunky remarks to Anthony 😀

  12. Alison says:

I love that not only did you patternmatch the fronts, but the way that you did a beautiful job of balancing the plaid on the front pockets and flaps, a fantastic and subtle detail… (I wonder if you could add a center back seam to the collar piece to also allow that to become symmetrical?) Are you sure that you don’t have a job as a fashion photographer? Your pictures are just as appealing as your sewing!!

    1. Jenny says:

Good noticing! So I can’t take credit for these photos – it was my other friend Jonas. But he is great, isn’t he!

  13. poppykettle says:

Gorgeous shirt 🙂 I’ve seen so many awesome versions of this pattern! He certainly has the right means of getting you to sew for him! Bang on.

    1. Jenny says:

Ha, indeed he does! And thanks!

  14. Tina says:

Beautifully constructed shirt modeled by a dude that is super easy on the old eye sockets… well done you! 🙂

    1. Jenny says:

      Thanks Tina 🙂

  15. You’re a great friend! And, well, so is any non-sewer who is willing to bounce in and out of fabric shops! So, Anthony is definitely worthy of some stitch-love. The shirt is amazing! It’s incredibly professional looking and the photos do great work of showcasing it.

    1. Jenny says:

Thanks! And yes he’s very patient when it comes to fabric shopping “D

  16. KimP says:

I think I’m going to have to start stalking Anthony! : )

    1. Jenny says:

Ha ha ha I’ll tell him to watch out!

  17. Damn! This shirt looks GREAT! And your happy, hunky model looks great in it! Fantastic work! I had a plaid buttondown planned for my fella buuuuuut didn’t manage my time well and didn’t get it done, ugh!

  18. Love the shirt, the fit is perfect!! I made my husband a small duffel this year. I was nervous about it, but it turned out great!

  19. :). I made a green one for the Dude I happened to marry last year. This year, I copied his favorite flannel to make a new one. I still like the Negroni better. 😉

  20. Fiona Parker says:

This is a really beautiful garment Jenny. I love that plaid and you’ve done a great job at matching it. What a lucky guy!

Let me know what you think!
