When the weather turns wet and windy, having a raincoat that actually fits well and looks great can transform those dreary days. The Marston Raincoat pattern has been giving sewists exactly that: a functional, stylish coat that keeps them dry while looking fabulous.

Today we’re celebrating four makers who’ve created their own custom Marstons, each one uniquely tailored to their body and style.

Cover up without compromise with the Marston Raincoat! Keep dry all season long without squashing your bust, thanks to darts in cup sizes C-H which are included in this fully-lined all-weather coat.

Featuring a full-coverage hood with optional brim, double-layer cuffs with cozy knit ribbing, and an internal waist drawstring for shaping, the Marston is an advanced level project you’ll love to sew and wear. Finished with snaps on the zipper flap, patch pockets and back vents, you’ll achieve a professional look, knowing you can rely on Cashmerette design for a beautiful fit for your curves.

Kirsty’s Sage Green Marston Raincoat

Kirsty created a magnificent and truly waterproof rain jacket using woven polyester raincoat fabric lined with PUV, and she seam-taped all the seams to make it completely watertight.

She made a size 12 G/H graded to a 14 at the waist and 16 at the hip, and her measurements are 37″ (94cm) high bust, 42.5″ (108cm) full bust, 35″ (90cm) waist, and 48″ (122cm) hips.

“I’m thrilled with the jacket,” Kirsty says. “It feels tidy enough to wear about the city but also practical enough to wear hiking or doing outdoor activities. The fit is perfect – enough room for some layers but not too oversized.”

She’s already packing her Marston for a holiday that will include both city exploring and hiking—the perfect test for a versatile raincoat!

Tiffaney’s Bold Pink Marston Raincoat

Tiffaney’s pink Marston is impossible to miss—and that’s exactly the point! She told us: “I am a softball and soccer mom, often braving the elements to cheer on my kids. The bright pink fabric will ensure that I will be seen either on the sideline or walking in the rain.”

Tiffaney made a size 20 C/D and graded to size 22 at the waist and hip, and her measurements are 44″ (112 cm) high bust, 48″ (122 cm) full bust, 48″ (122 cm) waist, and 52″ (132 cm) hips. She used a cotton waxed twill and finger-pressed all seams, which made construction surprisingly quick.

The best part? Tiffaney finished her jacket just as a storm rolled in and was able to wear it that same day!

Samantha’s Colorful Marston Raincoat

In her typical style, Samantha didn’t hold back when it came to customizing her Marston:

  • She added reflective piping to the hood insert seams, lower center back seam, and a horizontal seam across the upper front above the bust dart.
  • She completely reimagined the hood elastic system by adding an external casing to the hood lining, running the elastic through eyelets and toggles.
  • She  closed the back vent and added elastic to the hemline with toggles at the side seams.
  • For the pockets, she added a vertical welt pocket to the upper left front and changed the lower front pockets to an open welt style with internal pocket bags and inverted flap coverings.

And the result jacket is a masterpiece and so uniquely hers!

Samantha made a size 22 G/H with a 3″ broad back adjustment, sizing up so she could wear lots of layers underneath. Her measurements are 44.9″ (114 cm) high bust, 48″ (122 cm)  full bust, 42.5″ (108 cm)  the waist, and 48″ (122 cm) hip.  She made her coat in a striking printed PUL (Polyurethane Laminate) fabric from Noosa Fabric Co in Australia.

“I love it so much that I am making a second coat for a family member,” Samantha shares. Her top tip involves using a collar point pressing tool: “If you are using iron on waterproofing tape, a pressing tool like Judi’s Collar Point Pressing wooden tool with the padded cover allows you to more accurately press the waterproofing tape in place. The pressing tool allowed me to isolate the surface area I wanted to apply heat to, keeping the rest of the fabric out of the way and undamaged.”

Shelley’s Pastel Pink Marston Raincoat

Shelley created a timeless pastel pink Marston that she absolutely loves. “This is going to get sooooo much wear!” she enthuses. She streamlined her version by leaving off the waist and hood drawstrings and cuffs, and made a clever modification by cutting the front as a single piece instead of separate upper and lower parts. She also replaced the pockets with roomier bellows style pockets for even more functionality.

Shelley made a size 12 C/D and her measurements are 37″ (94 cm) high bust, 39.5″ (100 cm) full bust, 35″ (89 cm) waist, and 43″ (109 cm) hips.

Using water-repellent cotton trench coating with a stretch woven lining, Shelley found the construction surprisingly manageable. Her advice for other sewists is encouraging: “Don’t be daunted! Take your time and just focus on one stage at a time. Also – mind your thumb when you’re hammering the snaps!”

Shelley plans to wear her Marston with everything, joking that she’ll throw it on “every time the weather man so much as hints at the possibility of grey clouds!”
