Empire Waist and the power of representation

If you haven’t already heard me waxing lyrical about it, let me recommend once more the amazing film, “Empire Waist”. And in great news, it’s now available on demand! Keep reading for all the links.

Empire Waist is all about a plus size teenager who’s struggling with confidence and her body image. Then, through the power of sewing  her own clothes and the amazing community she develops around her, everything changes.

As you can imagine, as soon as I heard about the movie I adored the concept – and once I saw it, I was totally sold. It is REALLY, REALLY funny. And also made me cry more than I maybe ever have at a piece of media. The reason? It’s so profound seeing your own experiences, and people who look like you, on screen. The director Claire Ayoub grew up in a fat body and wanted to create the film she wish had existed when she was a teen – and it’s very obvious when you watch the movie how deeply she understands the topic.

I had the great delight to meet Claire – and many of you! – at the Empire Waist x Cashmerette event we held recently in the Boston area. Everyone was dressed up to the nines in me-mades, we had a sample sale (so glad to see so many gorgeous garments re-homed!), ice cream, and a Q&A with Claire after the movie.

My daughter meeting her very first movie director, Claire Ayoub!

It really was a profound experience to watch it with hundreds of other plus size people and sewists – so many people with tears in their eyes and knowing laughs and sighs at the challenges Lenore faces. I haven’t felt so surrounded by fellow souls in a long time! Plus, did I mention, it’s really very very funny?

Anyhow, I’m delighted that it’s now available for anyone to watch – and I cannot recommend enough that you download it tonight. Just stock up on tissues because trust me, you’re going to need them.

Jenny, thank you for spreading the word about this wonderful film. I’m 71 and still remember parents taking me to doctors and promising me money and cars if only…

Watching this was healing. People have no idea, do they?
