But we’ve made it beyond easy by partnering up with specialist bra supply stores around the world to bring you dozens (yup, dozens!) of gorgeous kits. These kits are designed specifically for the Willowdale Bra (pattern not included in kits) and sold and shipped by the stores from their websites. Keep reading to learn more about the Willowdale and the many beautiful kit options available. We also have a blog post coming up with recommendations for bra fabric and notion suppliers all around the world.

The best bra for large busts

When you have big boobs, it can be hard to find a bra in your size, even at a specialty lingerie shop. It’s especially true in the US, where many shops don’t carry cup sizes beyond a DDD/E, which means that many of us end up wearing an ill-fitting “sister” size. And if you do find a bra in your size, it’s unlikely to come in the seemingly endless designs or pretty fabrics that smaller bras come in.

So say goodbye to boring, ill-fitting bras and hello to the beautiful, supportive Willowdale!  The Willowdale is a large cup and plus size bra that features:

  • Full frame with underwires for comfort and support
  • A 4-piece cup design for a beautifully rounded shape for large boobs
  • Low cut front that won’t peek out of your clothes
  • Stretch lace upper cup that molds to your boobs’ unique shape
  • Outer power bra for added lift
  • Lined cups with fully enclosed seams for comfort
  • 126 separate sizes (band sizes 28-54, cups C-J). Pattern pieces are laid out in separate files by size without nesting and very little taping required!
  • Two views: lace upper cup, and full coverage lace

Let’s take a closer look at each view of the Willowdale.

View A is a half lace design, with a stretch lace upper cup and a solid body that is ideal for low-stretch fabrics.

Rachel is wearing View A in a nylon tricot and stretch lace.

Brittany is wearing View A in a neoprene/scuba knit and stretch lace.

View B is an all-over lace design. The lace pieces are all underlined (with the exception of the upper cup) and you have the option of using a decorative lace edge on the bottom band.

Bra kits galore!

The Willowdale Bra is designed for for a fantastic fit using low-stretch fabrics (like nylon tricot or firm scuba) with a stretch lace upper cup and power mesh back band. Want to use a no-stretch fabric for the cups and front frame? It’s totally doable, but the fit will be firmer so you may need to go up a cup size.

Sourcing bra making supplies can be a challenge, but we’ve made finding fabric and notions for your first Willowdale beyond simple! Bras require lots of specialist bits and bobs, so we’ve partnered up with specialist bra supply stores around the world to bring you dozens of gorgeous kits. These kits are designed specifically for the Willowdale Bra (pattern not included in kits) and sold and shipped by the stores from their websites.

Plunge into bra-making

Bra making can seem intimidating, but we’re here to help! Like with any sewing project, constructing a bra is just a matter of following a series of steps. The Willowdale Bra is rated intermediate, and our detailed, step-by-step illustrated instructions walk you through the entire process, from cutting your fabric to sewing the bow at the very end. If you’ve ever wanted to try your hand at bra-making, here’s your chance!

That said, you should keep in mind that there will be some fitting work involved. We’re designed and tweaked and iterated on the Willowdale to achieve the best fit for as many sewists as possible straight out of the gate. But our boobs are shaped in an endless array of shapes and sizes, and measurements aren’t always enough to determine your ideal bra size off the bat. So be ready to make a muslin or two before you ace the fit, and we’ll be here to help you along the journey. We’ll be sharing lots of resources and tutorials to help you create your ideal bra fit, as well as everything else bra-related: sourcing fabric and notions, inspiration, hacks, and more!

Your Willowdale questions, answered!

Can I get the Willowdale as a printed pattern?

The Willowdale Bra is only available as a PDF pattern, with print at home (very little taping required!) and copy shop files are also included if you’d rather send it out to be printed or you don’t have a printer at home. If you’re new to PDF patterns, check out our complete guide for beginners.

Do I need to figure out my size before purchasing the Willowdale?

Nope! All of the sizes are included in the pattern, which accommodates full bust from 31″ to 65″ (79 to 165 cm) and underbust from 28″ to 55″ (72 to 142 cm).

We’ve got lots of helpful info for choosing your starting size in the pattern instructions, and will have a tutorial on our blog as well.

Are these US sizes, European sizes, or what?

There’s so much variation between bra sizing from country to country and company to company, so we recommend identifying your size using your measurements, and the instructions we’ve included in the pattern for choosing your size! You will likely find your recommended size is similar to your RTW size, but even if it’s not, don’t worry! Your measurements are the best guide to start with.

I’ve never made a bra before. Should I try the Willowdale?

Absolutely! Bra making is a whole lot of fun, and so empowering (especially when you’re making a bra designed for your body!). We wouldn’t recommend it as your very first sewing project ever, but if you feel comfortable sewing with woven and knit fabric, we say go for it.

Our detailed instructions and many blog tutorials to come will help you through every step of the process, plus we’ll be sharing tons of resources for online classes, books, and more.

What supplies do I need in order to make a Willowdale?

You can find the complete list of fabrics and notions in this post or in the pattern instructions booklet.

Can I sew a bra on a regular sewing machine?

You sure can! You can make the Willowdale from start to finish on a basic sewing machine (a serger is not needed).

It’s helpful to have a walking foot, but it’s not essential.

Can I make the Willowdale without underwires?

The Willowdale is designed to be an underwire bra, but you can sew it up as is and leave out of the underwires if you’d like something less structured (but also less supportive).

Can I make the Willowdale with bra foam?

The Willowdale isn’t designed to be used with bra foam.

Do I need to be in the Cashmerette Club to get this pattern?

Nope! The Willowdale is available to anyone to purchase, although as an exclusive offer ONLY in June, All Access members get the Willowdale Bra free a special bonus! (All Access members who are signed up by June 30 will be sent a discount coupon eligible for one Willowdale bra PDF. Offer ends June 30, 2022 at 11:59 PM EST.)

  1. Eloise says:

This looks amazing! As you have worked with a specialist bra drafter, I’m just wondering what assumptions the pattern makes regarding inner/outer fullness and lower/upper cup fullness?

  2. Heidi says:

This pattern looks great (as could be expected from the ones involved). I started making bras more than 12 yrs ago and I am getting quite good at “reading” a pattern. Only big girls know what big girls need is what I have come to realise. Ill make it up and comment again.

Let me know what you think!
