Fabric ideas for the Vernon Shirt

Sew your dream gape-free button-up shirt with the Vernon Shirt! Today we’re sharing our favorite fabric ideas for the Vernon.

It’s time to reclaim the button-up with the Vernon Shirt! This boob-friendly take on the essential button-up shirt features two views: View A is a classic shirt with a traditional collar and collar stand, and full sleeves with narrow cuffs. View B is a fashion-forward version with a dramatic collar, covered button placket, and lantern sleeves with wide cuffs.

From flannel work shirts to posh statement tops, the Vernon can do it all—and with cup sizes from C–H, thoughtfully placed bust darts, and side seam shaping, you’ll get a fabulous fit from collar to hem.

The Vernon is designed for light- to mid-weight woven fabrics such as shirting, lawn, or flannel. The lantern sleeves of View B work best with a medium weight fabric for a more structured look. We’re sharing some of our favorite Vernon-worthy fabrics available now—so let the shopping begin!

Classic and essential

Is there anything more useful than a classic button-up in a solid color? You’re sure to get tons of mileage out of your solid Vernon.

Drape yourself in denim

Chambray button-ups are always in style and can be worn so many different ways: with black pants, tied at the hem over a skirt, open over a t-shirt, you name it!

Stripes and stripes

1 // 2 // 3

Ignore those traditional styling “rules”—stripes are for everyone! If you’ve always wanted a stripey button-up that doesn’t gape at the front, this is your time to make one.

Cozy in plaid

Flannel makes the coziest button-ups! Plaid can be a bit tricky to pattern match, but also gives you lots of opportunities to play with orientation. (Bias back yoke, anyone?)

Abstract animal prints

1 // 2 // 3

Year after year, we fall more in love with animal prints. From the realistic to the abstract, they’ll turn your Vernon into anything but ordinary.

Fun with florals

1 // 2 // 3 // 4

These four prints are just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to florals! From ditsy to large-scale, you can have it all.

Playful prints

1 // 2 // 3 // 4

The Vernon makes a great canvas to showcase a fun print! Make a one-of-a-kind statement button-up you’ll love to wear again and again.

Let’s start sewing!

We hope you found a fabric (or two… or ten) that you’ve fallen in love with, so let’s start sewing the Vernon! And be sure to share your makes with #VernonShirt and #Cashmerette so we can admire your fabulous fabric pairing.
